Ultimately, the project relied heavily on our logistics and planning expertise and our detailed preparations proved their worth as the event went off – with just 24 hours notice - and without a hitch.

M6 Toll

There can’t be many event specialists in the UK who can lay claim to opening a new motorway, but that’s exactly what Lemoncake did!

Having designed and produced a number of pre-opening presentation modules for local community presentations, together with a series of training videos, including a unique ‘crisis management’ programme, we were delighted to be asked to create and produce the motorway opening ceremony.

With high security and confidentiality being key, we were given only 24 hours notice to put our already well planned logistics and production into place; installing temporary platforms for press and broadcast TV, outdoor PA system and a method by which Alistair Darling – then Secretary of State for Transport – would activate the toll booth barriers to rise in sequence and allow the building queue of cars and trucks to proceed for the cameras.

Hospitality for VIP guests was also provided in a series of adjacent marquees – and following the early-morning ceremony, they were coached to the nearby Belfry Hotel for a celebration breakfast.

Finally, to add further complexity into the schedule, one of the client’s PR companies had organised a promotional flypast by a banner-towing aircraft, all of which had to be co-ordinated to the second to ensure this was also captured by the waiting photographers.
